Amarillo South-Randall County 230 kV Transmission Line

The Amarillo South Substation-Randall County Substation 230 kilovolt (kV) transmission line will improve electric reliability and increase the capability of the existing transmission grid in and around the city of Amarillo. The project consists of 20 miles of new 230 kV transmission line between the Amarillo South Substation, located south of Amarillo, to the Randall County Substation, which is located east of Amarillo. A Certificate of Convenience and Necessity application was filed with the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) in October 2011 and approved by the PUCT on October 12, 2011.

The 230 kV line will be constructed of single pole steel structures. The structures, which are between 80 and 140 feet tall, will be spaced 500 to 800 feet apart. Typically, a 90-foot right-of-way will be required. The project was completed in late March 2013 and energized on April 22, 2013.
